Aikido is a relatively modern, powerful,
defensive martial art, suitable for both men and women since it does not rely
on physical strength or size.
Whereas other arts have weight, gender and age divisions, Aikido is suitable
for everyone. It is not a
competitive art. The techniques require cooperation to learn and when
executed properly, an attacker will be controlled regardless of their
physique. Aikido draws from many different arts and its underlying principle of harmony and blending energies enables both subtlety and power to be used in defence. |
The word aikido is formed of three Japanese characters,
ai - joining/blending. ki -
spirit.
dō - way.
Aiki is a martial arts principle or tactic. It typically describes an idea of oneness or blending in the midst of combat. This principle finds expressions in such lethal concepts as ai-uchi
meaning "mutual strike/kill", but in aikido it generally describes
the more elevated notion of blending rather than clashing. Emphasis is upon
joining with the rhythm and intent of the opponent in order to find the optimal
position and timing with which to apply the technique. The techniques of aikido
can, when applied judiciously, divert or immobilize rather than damage or kill.
As a result, some consider aikido to be a practical symbol of meeting
aggression (physical, verbal, etc.) with an effective but merciful response,
and finding harmony in conflict.
The Arts founder Morehei Ueshiba
declared,
"To control aggression without
inflicting injury is the Art of Peace."

The above description aims to try and
describe the underlying principles of Aikido in general terms — An Art of
Harmony and Peace. Keeping in mind these principles as a egoalf. In practice at the beginner level and
also throughout your time at University, practical and effective self-defence
tactics and techniques (unarmed and
armed) will be taught. (Some
subtle, some not so subtle). Also
being a ecompletef art, you will hopefully discover more of your potential both
physically, emotionally and psychologically.
Also a brilliant way to get fit, flexible, improve co-ordination, timing
and increase your
confidence.
